Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes
Though there have been many attempts of recreating the magic of Sherlock Homes on screen but the best one till date was the recent work by director Guy Ritchie. It has been widely regarded as the best work on this theme. The main cast included Robert Downey, Jr. as Sherlock Homes, Jude Law as his friend Dr. John Watson, Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler and Mark Strong as the evil Lord Blackwood.
The whole movie was shot all over London. The shooting which commenced in October 2008 had its share of injuries and problems. In November 2008 Millet who played the role of Dredger accidentally punched Downey which caused quite a bit of bloodshed. Other problems included shortening of shooting time due to the locals complaining about the shooting disturbing their routine.
The other important aspects of the movie were the costumes and set designs. Ritchie was very particular about how the cast was portrayed. The director continued with the tradition of Holmes wearing a fedora. Both the main characters were quite maverick and at the same time quirky, their costumes also suggested the same. Their costumes were purposely kept messy and it contained various artifacts and objects suggesting how much these people had traveled.
The movie opened across the world around Christmas time in the year 2009 and received positive reviews from almost all the critics. It received positive reviews from the top critics of Rotten Tomatoes, the popular online critics. Another popular critic of the Chicago Sun-Times, Roger Ebert gave the movie three out of four stars.
He acknowledged the strong characters in the movie with a very potent visuals and action-packed plot. The movie was also able to garner positive reviews from Jake Tomlinson of Shave Magazine. According to him Downey, Jr. and Law together made a lethal combination and Strong, who portrayed the evil sorcerer, was called “a convincing and creepy villain.” Still there were a few others who severely criticized the movie.
David Stratton of The Australian said the movie is more youth centric and that’s why cool stunts and action has but in the process the director didn’t manage to recreate the magic of Holmes and consequently was unable to recreate the magic of one of the greatest creations of literature. A. O. Scott of the New York Times said that the director’s approach to films was “to make cool movies about cool guys with cool stuff.”
Despite these negative reviews it opened to a grand opening. In US it opened to an estimated $62.4 million in its first weekend and was placed second only to Avatar at the US box office. By the end of the year it was regarded as the 8th best grossing movie of the year 2009 and the best collections for director Guy Ritchie.
The movie’s end easily suggests the possibility of a sequel. By the time Guy Ritchie finished the movie he discussed a possibility of a sequel with the production team and signed Robert Downey, Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams and the other cast members for a possible sequel. The preproduction of the movie started on March 21, 2010. Talks are on with various other actors to star in the sequel whose story is under work these days.
