Taking pictures Lightning in Bangkok

compiled by: Keith Taylor

I need to inform you of, I’m getting the time if my entire life currently.

Beyond the windows of my little studio apartment in downtown Bangkok, our home base for few days, hawaiian isle storm is raging. The streets are flooding with water, bolts of lightning shoot on the sky every couple of seconds and peals of thunder crackle because of the air almost constantly.

Storms aren’t anything new – I’ve spent much of the recently in Thailand, and certain times of the season they’re a daily occurrence – but what really excites me would be the fact Not long ago i learned how to get photos with the lightning.

I’d always assumed going without shoes required many special equipment for you to catch may moment associated with a lightning bolt. I knew that human reflexes are not near sharp enough to trap a bolt manually, and perhaps if he or she were the digital camera isn’t fast enough to try an attempt over time. Things learned, though, usually lightning photography can be executed by using a ‘fire-and-forget’ simplicity. All you need to do is make sure the camera is stable, set the shutter speed to bulb exposure and wait for an lightning show up in frame.

Naturally, this is ideal at nighttime when there aren’t many types of light to overexpose the shot, but this evening I’ve taken some pretty amazing photos on the Bangkok skyline being attacked by your wrath with the sky.

There are 2 problems faced by way of the lightning photographer. You are that long exposures heat the sensor something awful, and so the longer the exposure the grainier the shot. Ideally you prefer an exposure don’t when compared with an a small number of seconds.

The more problem, though, comes from my Canon T2i battery. The T2i can perform around 400 shots originating from a full battery, when you’re shooting long exposures that figure plummets. When shooting long exposures you could burn via the battery in just sixty minutes, and when you’ve ever tried lightning photography you will know you won’t ever wish to stop so that the last bolt.

The simple solution, however, would be to plan your energy usage when you begin. I prefer an electric battery grip when I’m shooting lightning, allowing me to load a supplementary Canon T2i battery near the first. This bumps up my shooting time for them to a couple of hours, however still virtually enough.

To give myself made the effort I truly need, the ideal option would be to cycle through three batteries. As i’m very well shooting in the camera grip attached I’ll come with an extra battery charging indoors. As soon as i get battery power warning I’ll yell inside for my family to bring from fully charged Canon T2i battery. When that fails, I’ll rush straight to grab it myself (avoiding my wife’s yelling) and replace one of several batteries in to the charger.

It’s not actually perfect, and also smart choice would be to install another power source, when you don’t want to buy extra equipment it will let you have a few hours prior to when the power drain finally catches up to you!

If you find yourself in need of a Canon T2i Battery this one is available on Amazon.com and I highly recommend it.
