Perhaps one of the most significant series of events regarding the socialization question took place years ago. Here in the US, there was the Columbine High School killing spree that shocked the nation. Even worse, other events of a similar nature have occurred as well. Now, school security is much tighter in many schools as a result of this. Considering this situation, how can parents be blamed for wanting to protect their kids from this kind of danger? As long as parents who homeschool their kids make sure that they’re exposed to enough social and cultural events, it’s hard to argue with their point of view.

You can seek out other families in your area who also home school their children to help with socialization. You can find activity groups on the internet but this approach raises some safety concerns. There are so many homeschoolers across the country, anyway, that you shouldn’t have a problem finding one in your area. You can then contact them and have them introduce you to other local families. But since the internet has become such a social vehicle, it’s a natural place to look. You have the option of starting your own online group or creating a Facebook group for your area.

While this may not be obvious at first glance, the socialization of a child who is educated at home may be influenced by financial factors. In many cases there are plenty of chances for children to receive social exposure.

Yet many of these opportunities cost money to join, and this isn’t affordable for all parents. Unfortunately, parents may not always be able to pay all these costs, which ends up excluding the kids from these activities. There is also a possible danger of creating the desire for children to experience the public school environment. Children will sometimes feel the desire to experience the very thing that their parents try the hardest to protect them from.

Socialization is partly a matter of being able to freely engage in communication with those around you. Kids schooled at home are far more likely to feel confident and relaxed than those in a conventional classroom. In a classroom, kids are often reluctant to participate for fear of being made fun of or criticized, either by other students or the teacher. This discourages many kids from participating in classrooms and is hardly conducive to them learning. Rather than encourage learning and self expression, this type of environment does the opposite. The homeschooling experience does not have these pitfalls and lets kids grow into confident adults. Parents don’t have thirty or more kids to police and can provide much more individual attention. If there are several kids in a family, they can be taught to respect each other’s efforts. It is entirely possible that the question of socialization rests more on the quality of that process. It’s true that children may learn some valuable social skills in school, and perhaps form true friendships, but they can also suffer many damaging consequences. So then a parent could feel like choosing what is ultimately best for the child. There’s not necessarily a correct decision that applies to everybody. As we have discussed, there are serious and legitimate concerns regarding the safety of children in public and private schools. This is something you really have to look at closely in order to ensure the safety of your children.
